Hello All,
I may be one of your "oldest" members as 51 y.o. now and an Alum of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Illini Emergency Medical Services. In fact, in 1978, the year I transferred in to UI as a Junior-transfer, a cohort of mine and I saw a need on the campus to enhance EMS response and after many meetings, newspaper stories, some local controversy and even a few threats, we focused on stadium and special event EMS. My cohort when onto Med School and approximately 2 years after we organized the group, with me then in Grad School, we covered in-crowd EMS at Memorial Stadium with 12 EMTs for the UI Athletic Association. Before IEMS got into the stadium, private ambulance company EMT's and Paramedics would pick up pt's at the First Aid Rooms on each side of the stadium but ushers up in the seating areas would carry "victims" down to the lower levels for aid. They used very thin, homemade wooden backboards with small plastic straps which hung in the vomitories of the stadium as their pt transport mechanism. So after seeing this, we focused immediately on the stadium and tabled the idea of trying to start a Volunteer EMS group for the campus. The Midwest was not as receptive to Volunteer EMS as some NJ campuses were at the time.
Anyway, thought I would join your group as just maybe I can add to the forum. I remember my campus life like it was yesterday. I wish we had you guys around in 1978-1980 as sometimes it was very lonely when fighting the campus administration. Now, many years later, I work with the US Dept. of Labor at OSHA as an investigator and still an EMT along the NJ Coast. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome beachems! Its great to have you here. It might be interesting to hear some stories from back in the day as to how things were done then and whatnot.

Welcome! The evolution of EMS has been interesting, especially when it comes to applying it to collegiate EMS. Collegiate EMS, as we know, is a relatively new phenomenon. However, while collegiate ems has developed, the role of the EMT-B (what used to be the EMT-1) has become very restricted. Some people don't like that really anyone can be certified these days as an EMT. Paramedics, in the meantime, have been able to do more and more than ever before.
This leads me to my point/question:
What was it like to have a collegiate ems agency in the beginning of collegiate ems?
